Beervana Community Update and First Event Announcement

A Friday morning update and gentle exhortation. The Beervana Community is currently about sixty strong (I’m still reconciling continuing members, so the numbers are squishy), with around 25 new folks. That’s fantastic! The Beervana Community helps support this site by member donations, and this year we plan to have a more vigorous program of events. If you’re at all interested, consider joining today. Memberships start at $1 a month, and if even that’s too much, ping me and we can work something out. Of course I am happy to accept more! Read more about the community here.

A brief logistical note. If you sign up and haven’t included an email or have used an email you never check, please send me a preferred email to contact you. We are also working on a new Slack channel. If you would like to continue your membership, please pop over to the ko-fi page and check your status. I know of at least one member who thought he was paying but wasn’t.

First Event

The date is still TBD (watch your emails!), but Breakside Brewing’s Ben Edmunds has agreed to join us in late January/early Feb. Many of you know Ben or know of him—he’s Breakside’s master brewer, the one who oversees the most award-winning team in Oregon. Ben is one of the most knowledgeable brewers around, he’s a great communicator, and he’s used to speaking to groups. He will be a perfect guest to kick things off. Breakside is famous for their IPAs, so we’ll talk hops and get Ben to go deep on fun stuff like brewery design, biotransformation, hop selection, hop use, and his theory about “punchy” versus “soft” hops. Breakside does a lot of things, of course, so we may touch on lagers, their barrel program, and whatever else suits our fancy. Ben got his start as a homebrewer, and he might even offer you a tip or two. I’ll start out interviewing Ben and you can weigh in as we go along—and I’ll leave time at the end for a general Q&A. Let’s kick this thing off right!

If this sounds fun, by all means join the community.
