Blog/Newsletter category

Since 2006, Jeff Alworth has covered beer and brewing on this site—over four thousand posts and counting. In the time since he started Beervana, he has traveled throughout the US and to fourteen European countries to tour breweries and experience local beer culture. He’s covered the biggest stories in beer, the new trends and changes in the industry, the brewery births and deaths. Beervana isn’t just a personal site, however. It has won a number of awards for journalism (thirteen as of 2023) from the North American Guild of Beer Writers. (See “awards” below.) It has been one of the most trusted sites for accurate reporting about beer and brewing in the world.

Background
This site began life in the heady days before social media. Jeff had written about beer for the better part of a decade, but was at the time mostly covering politics in his writing. Beervana was a fun little side project that allowed him to indulge in a subject of pure joy. Within three years, the emotional toll made him give up political writing and put most of his attention into this site. In 2010, Jeff began writing about beer full-time, and Beervana has always anchored his writing, giving him an outlet to engage the beer (and cider) world no matter what project he’s been working on.

In 2017 Jeff professionalized the site, moving it to the current url, and brought in the site’s first sponsor, Guinness, to help fund the work here. Later, Jeff added local sponsors pFriem Family Brewers and Breakside Brewery. All three have been wonderful partners who support this work. Nowhere on the web will you find a site with the depth and breadth of Beervana, with detailed descriptions of beer and brewing techniques, first-person virtual tours the world’s great breweries, industry analysis, meditations on culture, discussions of beer’s rich history, and even, occasionally, humorous pieces.

Awards

Peers in the writing community have been very generous in their praise of the work here at Beervana. In the past several years, it has been called the best or second best blog six times by the North American Guild of Beer Writers. Recent individual pieces that have been cited include:
