Two Days in Voss
[Voss, Norway] The past two days I’ve been immersed in the deeply local, traditional culture of Voss, a gorgeous town in a fjord of western Norway. It is striking country, with sheer mountains that cradle emerald valleys and lakes. I was able to brew with Kjetil Dale on Tuesday, and yesterday I was treated to a special feast of smalahove (sheep’s heads) and kveik in a remarkable 727-year-old wooden guild hall.
I will post something more lengthy about the experience in the next week or two. I also interviewed Kjetil for the podcast. But for now I’m a bit too tired to do much beyond posting a few pictures. It was an extraordinary two days and I also need to digest the experience a bit.
The pictures, which I can’t caption on my phone, are (1) Voss, (2) Kjetil’s eldhus, or fire-house, a place farmers roasted meat, baked bread, and brewed beer, (3) the copper kettle over the fire in the eldhus (4) the juniper infusion, (5) the old hall, and (6) the communal carved drinking bowls, or kjenga (kveik beer in the bottle).
